The Spring Woods Canoe Group (SWCG) is a volunteer group of instructors who teach canoeing, kayaking, small craft safety, swift water rescue, and instructor classes for the Red Cross and the American Canoe Association. Most of us are Boy Scout leaders who wish to teach people how to have fun safely in a canoe or kayak or on the river. We teach most of our flatwater classes at Camp Strake in Conroe, and we teach our whitewater classes in the Texas Hill Country on rivers such as the San marcos and Guadalupe. We train both Boy and Girl Scouts on an individual basis as well. We can teach the merit badge class and enjoy doing a one day combination Introduction to River Padling on the Colorado, combining both paddling and safety instruction with a recreational river trip. We highly recommend that you start your troop out paddling a recreational kayak, as the learning curve for paddling a kayak successfully is about 10 minutes, while the learning curve for paddling a canoe is about 10 hours. We provide all paddling equipment for our classes, including, canoes, kayaks, paddles, lifejackets, throw bags, dry bags, and books. We are willing to loan videos to your troops to learn about paddling skills and safety. For more information, see the 2012 Canoeing and kayaking Classes document below, or look at the link to the Canoeing and Kayaking page. Applications can be downloaded from the attachments site.
